Tellus Platform Now Providing the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) Series Data

Tellus Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku, Tokyo, hereinafter "Tellus") has started providing API access to data from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) series via its satellite data platform, "Tellus."

Overview of GOSAT
The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) is a joint project by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Ministry of the Environment (MOE), and the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES). The first satellite, GOSAT, was launched in 2009, followed by its successor, GOSAT-2, in 2018. These satellites primarily observe key greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane.
Since April 2024, Tellus has been designated by the MOE as the platform for providing GOSAT series data and has been working on data visualization and publication preparation.
New Features for Enhanced Accessibility
Traditionally, satellite data has been difficult for non-experts to use. To broaden accessibility, Tellus is introducing a tool (GOSAT Plugin) that enables users to search and perform basic analyses of GOSAT series data on the open-source GIS (Geographic Information System) software QGIS (*). This tool allows users to visualize greenhouse gas variations on a global scale and display measurement distributions as point cloud data.

Collaboration with Bascule Inc.
In November 2024, in collaboration with Bascule Inc., we created a preliminary 3D product using GOSAT data, which was exhibited at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Moving forward, any Tellus user will be able to create and utilize such products, regardless of whether the purpose is commercial or non-commercial.
